- The data set contains 6
variables: F-Career, Son_ID, S_Choice, Famstruc, Race and
Intcept.
- The first variable, F_Career, defines seventeen level-2
units, each being the father's occupation.
- Son_ID is used to number the sons within each level-2
unit.
- S_Choice is a dichotomous outcome variable that is defined
as follows:
- S_Choice = 1: Son's current occupation is different from
his father's occupation
- S_Choice = 2: Son's current occupation is the same as
his father's occupation
- The variable Famstruc is family structure, coded 1 in
the case of an intact family background, and 2 if the family
background was not intact.
- The fifth variable, Race, is coded 1 in the case of white
respondents and 2 in the case of non-white respondents.
- The father's occupation, F_Career, is coded as follows:
- 17 Professional, Self-Employed
- 16 Professional, Salaried
- 15 Manager
- 14 Salesman-Non retail
- 13 Proprietor
- 12 Clerk
- 11 Salesman-Retail
- 10 Craftsman-Manufacturing
- 9 Craftsman-Other
- 8 Craftsman-Construction
- 7 Service Worker
- 6 Operative-Non manufacturing
